The movie in pink is taking theaters by storm. The blondie behind the screen we all know, love and adore–Margot Robbie–had everyone ecstatic for the release. Making $1.2 billion dollars in sales worldwide, “Barbie” was a summer hit.
Announced in 2019, Robbie confirmed the live action cast featuring her and Ryan Gosling. The movie idea consisted of Barbie getting kicked out of Barbie Land for not being “perfect” enough.
The movie made me laugh, cry, and cringe. “Barbie” shows an accurate depiction of how women feel in today’s society. Barbie has always been seen as the social standard–blonde, blue eyes, perfect body. Young girls who play with Barbies are taught to think any look other than that is considered “ugly”.
I have been waiting for Barbie since the day of the release. My childhood dreams of my favorite doll coming to life were about to come true. The movie, however, showed me a different side to Barbie.
Expecting a happy, fun-filled movie, I did not expect it to have a deep meaning behind it. It touched on topics like body image issues, motherhood and men’s rules. For being expected to be a light-hearted, happy movie, it was disappointing.
However, I thought the touchier side of the movie was great. It shined light on the body image issues produced in young girls. Always seeing unrealistic social standards, girls start to doubt themselves.
The goal of Barbie is to make women feel like they can do anything. However, the movie shows the other side of this expectation.
Overall, the movie is very controversial and has its critics. However, I think it did a great job of showing the struggles of young girls’ body issues due to the unrealistic expectations. I do wish we got more of the upbeat, fun movie I was expecting.
