Jaycee Nicholas began teaching choir at Silverado High School this school year.
“The thing that I love most about choir is that it is an ensemble that utilizes the human voice,” Nicholas said. “The human voice is a musical instrument that is a vulnerable instrument because it is a part of each individual. So when a group gets together to join their voices together, it connects voices, hearts and lives.”
Nicholas said she always wanted to be a teacher and decided to teach choir when she took it in high school.
“I had a teacher who believed in me. She allowed me to participate in teaching sectionals, and to serve in other leadership roles,” Nicholas said. “It was through those experiences that I came to this job, and I have been loving it!”
Nicholas learned to teach choir at Brigham Young University, taking voice lessons and classes on how to teach accurately. She sang with BYU Singers, BYU’s top choir. Nicholas also spent six months teaching choir at a middle school. This is her second year teaching.
“My plan is to keep the traditions that make the Silverado High School Choir program great,” Nicholas said.
The Silverado Choir will sing in four concerts this year and will participate in the district festival. The Chamber Singers will carol in December.
“I am so excited to meet [Silverado students] and to get to know their strengths and talents,” Nicholas said. “I want them to know that there is a place for everyone in choir, and that I am here to help them with their goals!”
