Kaitlyn Ciarlo was teaching 1st and 2nd grade at Kesterson Elementary School and 7th grade at Schofield Middle School before she joined Silverado High School this fall, teaching alongside her mother, Patricia Ciarlo, in the math department.
Initially, she was somewhat nervous about her first year teaching in high school. Ciarlo teaches pre-algebra and algebra, and so far it has gone well.
“High school students are a bit more mature and care more about getting their work done,” Ciarlo said.
Her environment caused her to change schools two times, but she only moved to Silverado when there was an opening after one of the previous algebra teachers retired.
Previously, Ciarlo was a student here at Silverado, and she had her mother as her algebra teacher.
One reason Ms. Ciarlo decided become a math teacher is because both of her parents are also math teachers.
Here at Silverado, Ms. Ciarlo ended up moving into Mrs. Ciarlo’s previous classroom.
“It’s great; I took a lot of stuff down from the walls,” Ms. Ciarlo says describing her mother’s old classroom.
Her mom also said it’s “great” because “I upgraded to a bigger room.”
Her most challenging moment so far this year was her schedule getting rearranged to include some sections of pre-algebra and learning new names. However, that didn’t stop her, and she is looking forward to working with her mother and other teachers. Mrs. Ciarlo helps Ms. Ciarlo whenever she needs it.
As for her rules in the classroom, Ms. Ciarlo tells her students they will be fine “as long you try hard and do your best and not be a bother to anyone around you.”
Her mother, Mrs. Ciarlo, has been teaching at Silverado for 16 years and in the district for 30+ years.
Mrs. Ciarlo had no clue that her daughter would become a teacher until her daughter said she wanted to become an elementary teacher in college.
Since Ms. Ciarlo is new here, she has her whole department to help her out.
