On Oct. 4, Clark County School District was faced with sudden cybersecurity issues involving the email environment.
Online security issues pertaining to certain individuals may have been compromised which led to swift security measures implemented, including the resetting of all CCSD Gmail passwords.
Many students were unable to access Canvas or any school-based apps on campus until the passwords were reset. Following this action, students were still not permitted to access any of the applications outside of school property for roughly a week.
Information quickly spread amongst the public that the ones responsible for this major setback were hackers after personal information. According to their website, CCSD was able to quickly take action to protect the data of those targeted.
Hackers potentially gathered personal information on CCSD students, parents and employees, although so far, there have not been any confirmed reports on misuse of the data that was collected.
The investigation is currently ongoing with the involvement of third-party forensic investigators, while improvements are constantly being made to cybersecurity in hopes of protecting all CCSD data in the future.
“I believe that the constant updates and upgrades that they are doing to applications and levels of security are always going to be ongoing,” said Silverado Principal Jaime Ditto.
With the lack of access to assignments that students faced during the time period, some classes got behind on the curriculum.
Overall, the tech issues caused major setbacks, but CCSD schools are currently working on recovering from the incident and preventing any such things from occurring in the future.
