On Wednesday Dec. 6, during sixth period, students and teachers in Dual Credit classes connected to UNLV started getting alerts. Word spread. There was an active shooter at UNLV, only about six miles away from them. Their friends or family on campus were in danger.
Fortunately, campus police heroically confronted the shooter within minutes. As we now know, three faculty members were killed and one was wounded in this horrible attack by a disgruntled professor who had applied for a job at the university that he didn’t get.
“As a UNLV alumni with both friends and family on campus that day, it was an incredibly difficult day that left a mark on many of us,” said Silverado teacher Rebecca McGough. “Despite the heartbreaking event, it has been amazing to see how the community came together to support all those affected.”
All CCSD sports events were canceled on the day of the shooting. Silverado’s girls’ basketball team had a game that day at Clark, for example.
In response to the community trauma, UNLV closed its campus and canceled final exams this semester. CCSD Dual Credit students, however, did take their exams as normal.
CCSD sent an email to the school district asking them to wear red on Dec. 8 to show their support. Many students and teachers wore red or UNLV apparel to stand with UNLV.
