The many feelings of love can be portrayed in various ways. My favorite way is in music. There are countless different aspects of love, whether it’s heartbreak, falling in love, platonic love, and more that can be expressed through music
To walk you through some of my favorite love songs, I want to start with the song “I Will” by The Beatles.
In the chorus of “I Will” by The Beatles, they sing “Love you whenever we’re together,/ love you with all my heart.”
As cliche as these lyrics might sound, they embrace a beautiful sense of loving someone with your entire being. It exquisitely describes what it feels like to look at someone and know that is who your heart beats for.
A song that perfectly shows the aspect of having love so strong it actively breaks you is “Make You Feel My Love” by Adele. The entirety of the song is about wanting your love to be felt by someone you feel strongly should have it.
At the end of “Make You Feel My Love,” Adele sings, “Go to the ends of the earth for you, to make you feel my love.”
Not only is this a stunning way to close the song, but it is also a powerful way to depict the drastic lengths she would go to make the person feel her love for them.
Most songs about heartbreak and missing someone you love in general are typically repetitive. However, “Self Control” by Frank Ocean is a song that breaks that cycle. This song describes a feeling of missing someone and reminiscing about your stored memories of them, while also being aware of how the relationship went wrong.
My favorite lyric in “Self Control” by Frank Ocean is “Wish we’d grown up on the same advice, and our time was right.”
These lyrics portray a gut-wrenching idea of what the relationship would have been like if they had grown up with the same morals or experiences. To elaborate, if they had received the same advice, the relationship could have been different, given they would’ve understood each other on a different level making the relationship stronger. It conveys a sense of growth and reflection with a taste of gloom within it.
One of my favorite yet upsetting love tropes is “right person, wrong time.” Although “Self Control” by Frank Ocean touches on the topic decently well, a song that fully does in my opinion is “Waiting Room” by Pheobe Bridgers. The entire song is her addressing someone she wants to love, but the person won’t let her due to the issues they might have with themselves.
In the track “Waiting Room” by Pheobe Bridgers, she sings, “She’ll be the best you ever had if you let her.”
I think this lyric is one of the most heartbreaking lyrics I’ve ever heard. It indicates a longing for that person you know you can love, but it just isn’t the time for your love to intertwine.
In general, music is one of the most incredible things this world has brought us. When you add any aspect of love to music, it becomes truly extraordinary. I hope you enjoyed this tour of love in music and the lovely songs that came with it.
