It’s uproariously humorous. It poignantly conveys profound emotion. It is absolutely amazing and somewhat crazy. Welcome to “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” sponsored by Putnam Optometrists.
Before the musical even begins, it is impressive. There is a spectacular set, with walls and risers and posters. It has all the trappings of a school gym and really takes the audience into the spelling bee.
The acting is phenomenal. Those playing kids convincingly act as small children, and those playing adults effectively portray the mannerisms of grownups. It feels as though there are no teenagers on stage.
This musical is unique in that members of the audience become part of the show. Audience volunteers are called up and are part of the bee, spelling words along with the other actors. This audience participation makes each show different. In addition, actors at times come into the audience, making the experience truly immersive.
It’s also ridiculously funny. Contestants can ask for a word to be used in a sentence, and the sentences are hilarious. There are comical moments throughout the show that leave the audience in stitches.
The musical also is very emotional at times. It regularly cuts away from the bee to flashbacks of the children’s past. We get a glimpse into what the kid’s family relationships are like, relatable stories that tug at the heartstrings of anyone who watches.
All those involved worked extremely hard to make this musical a success. Their hard work and dedication paid off to create something amazing.
