On Jan. 30, students performed various Broadway hits during Silverado’s Broadway Café in the cafeteria. Last year’s venue took place in the much smaller back courtyard, so the cafeteria allowed for more people to attend and enjoy the event.
Broadway Cafe may be one night of the year, but there is much preparation that goes behind it. Singers must memorize their songs to sing in front of hundreds of people. Tech must ensure they have all the speakers set up properly and press play at the right time. Servers must bring food and drinks to the right tables as soon as possible.
The types of performances included solos, small groups and entire choirs. The songs originated from many different musicals across many decades, ranging from 1950 to 2017.
Sophomore Kiana Tolentino was one of the many performers. She sang “Once Upon a December” from Anastasia with the school’s Bella Voce choir.
“Performing was really exciting, and I loved listening to other performers,” Tolentino said.
However, without any support from tech, the event wouldn’t be possible. Senior Ty Ciccotelli was one of the tech members who helped prepare for the event.
“Although I wasn’t able to watch the actual performance, I was able to set up and watch the dress rehearsal,” Ciccotelli said. “Doing tech for stuff like this has always been something I loved, and I’m happy with the way our tech turned out.”
Before the show started, attendees were allowed to put their orders in. This year, the menu included vanilla cupcakes, chocolate cupcakes, assorted treats, hot cocoa and water. People received their orders from servers during an intermission.
Junior Ryan Weter was a performer and a server who talked about what it was like to be a waiter.
“There were lots of issues with the amount of trays, supplies, and tables [to serve],” Weter said. “At the end of the day, though, we pull through. It was super fun to work with everyone.”
Broadway Cafe also took place on the day of the soft lockdown, causing concern that the event was going to be canceled. People involved were stressed about the alarming rumors that had spread quickly.
Despite everything that had happened, Broadway Cafe was still a hit.
