If you’ve heard the roar of engines and honking drivers, you might think you’re at a race track with busy traffic. But nope–it’s Silverado’s parking lot, which is available for students, parents and staff.
Our early mornings at Silverado are often busy, and in the chaos, there are several problems.
For one thing, as the parking lot fills up, cars get more cramped in. When someone swings their door open, you get that roller coaster feeling. Your gut drops, and you squint your eyes, hoping you don’t hear the painful screech of their car door painting a scar across your vehicle.
Senior Kaizer Foiente had thoughts on this issue.
“Well, if they’re too close to the line, I usually go to another parking spot,” he said.
As a community, let’s try to be more aware of how we are parked, for the sake of our own vehicles, and others.
But there’s more. The blaring horn and screams of engines can be heard throughout the nearby neighborhood. These sounds alone are enough to make one person wake up; now imagine being right next to these obnoxious sounds. Despite how cool you think your car is, I think it’s starting to give many of us a headache.
Although our cars are a symbol of how far we’ve come from being backseat drivers, showing off so early in the morning is disruptive.
The parking lot can sound like a big city. After school, one car honks, and another car, and so on. Even the cops patrolling around the school parking lot try to stop these antics. The reason for this is that it adds potential danger to any driving situation.
In reality, excessive honking is stressful for drivers, especially for kids who just got their new car and license. This can scare drivers and cause minor accidents. Is honking your vehicle for fun with your friends really worth making everyone around you so nervous?
Sometimes, these antics escalate to more than just nuisances. Speeding in the parking lot can be hazardous. From what I’ve seen, it’s usually a parent trying to get in and out of the school fast. No matter the case, it is dangerous not only to vehicles, but to people in the cars and those walking.
Everyone should be careful in the parking lot. Cars are an extremely dangerous part of society, and these nuisances make accidents more likely. So slow down, look both ways, and next time you lay your fist on the horn, remember that there’s always someone with a siren and flashing lights to remind you not to.
